Estimating the fuel cost of a trip

Estimate gallons used by dividing trip distance by your vehicle's fuel economy in miles per gallon. Multiply estimated gallons by the expected price per gallon to calculate fuel cost.

Traffic, terrain, weather, speed, idling, and vehicle load can all affect actual fuel economy. For long trips, consider testing a lower MPG scenario to budget conservatively.

Worked example

Example: A 300-mile trip at 25 MPG uses about 12 gallons. At $3.50 per gallon, the estimated fuel expense is $42.
